The Past should not be judged by the standards of the Present.
~William Manchester, “The Last Lion, Winston Spencer Churchill”
My commentary on this…Manchester was making the point that this is how Winston Churchill viewed historical perspective. It is easy to view history and what took place through our tinted lenses of today, based on what we know now, or how we view social norms. But when we consider what people thought, felt, or understood about the world around them in the context of their lives and their times, it is easier not to summarily pass judgement on the people they were or the things they did.
History is about what did and didn’t happen, and the consequences. It is not always about us passing judgement.
